Without a doubt, taking proper care of your dentures can help preserve them — and your smile — for many years. Patients who wear dentures are at an increased risk of developing oral irritation and serious dental problems due to improper denture care and bad oral hygiene. To help you keep your dentures and smile in tip top shape, Greenville, SC dentist Dr. Matthew Willoughby of Willoughby Dental shares the following tips.

Brush Your Dentures Daily

Dentures must be brushed at least once a day. First, remove your dentures carefully, to avoid dropping and damaging them. Rinse your dentures in lukewarm water before brushing to remove any large food particles and debris. Next, use a soft-bristled tooth brush and gentle cleanser specifically made for dentures to brush all of the dentures’ surfaces. Use gentle strokes to avoid scratching the dentures.

Brush Your Gums, Tongue and Palate

Speaking of brushing, it is imperative you brush your mouth thoroughly in order to avoid irritation, infection and bad breath. Before placing your dentures, use a soft-bristled toothbrush to clean your gums, cheeks, the roof of your mouth, and tongue.

Soak Your Dentures When You’re Not Wearing Them

Your dentures must be kept in water whenever you are not wearing them. If not, they can dry out and warp. Be sure to soak them in water or an ADA-approved cleaning solution. Avoid soaking your dentures in hot water, as they can become distorted.

Attend All Follow-up Appointments

It is normal to feel minor discomfort and soreness when you first begin to wear your dentures. However, ongoing pain or difficulty speaking, chewing and eating while wearing your dentures should be immediately addressed by your dentist. During a follow-up dental appointment, your dentist will monitor the health of your mouth and the functionality of your dentures. If there is an oral health issue caused by your dentures, it can be handled promptly. Your dentist can also make adjustments to your dentures to improve their fit and comfort.
