A dental bridge is a restoration that closes the gap left by one or more missing teeth. The bridge you select depends primarily on the location of the gap in your mouth, how many teeth need to be replaced and your personal preferences.
Traditional Dental Bridge
Traditional bridges are the most common type of bridges used by dentists, and they are extremely strong.
A traditional bridge consists of a false tooth or teeth, called a pontic(s), held in place by two crowns on either side. The crowns are cemented onto the teeth on either side of the gap, and the pontic fits into the gap left by the missing tooth. The teeth adjacent to the gap must be prepared for the crowns; this involves removing a small amount of tooth enamel.
Cantilever Bridge
If you only have natural teeth on one side of the gap, a cantilever bridge may be a more suitable option. With a cantilever bridge, the pontic is supported by a crown on only one side, instead of both sides.
Cantilever bridges are very useful in certain cases. However, they are not as strong as traditional bridges and generally not recommended for use on the back teeth (i.e., molars), which are subjected to much of the force of the bite.
Maryland Bridge
A Maryland dental bridge is attached to the natural teeth on either side of the gap. Instead of relying on two crowns cemented to the natural teeth, a Maryland bridge has a metal or porcelain framework that attaches to the backs of the supporting teeth. Although this avoids the need to grind down the supporting teeth, it limits the strength of the bridge. Maryland bridges may be used on the front teeth that show when smiling.
