The decision to get dentures can be a positive, life-changing one. Not only do you regain a full set of healthy teeth, but you can eat and speak normally and comfortably again. Dentures can also boost your self-confidence, improve your appearance and even make you look younger.

But as with any change, getting used to wearing dentures may take time. In this blog post, Greenville dentist Dr. Matthew Warner shares important tips to help make your transition to dentures easier.

Practice, Practice, Practice

Any dentist or denture wearer will tell you that it takes time to adjust to eating and speaking with dentures. Before going out to eat in public, spend some time at home eating a variety of foods to become more comfortable with your dentures. Start with soft foods and be sure to eat using both sides of your mouth simultaneously. You can practice speaking with dentures by reading a book or singing your favorite songs out loud. If you still experience problems speaking or chewing with your dentures after a few weeks, it could be that your dentures do not fit properly (your dentures should fit snugly yet comfortably). Dentures that are loose are more likely to slip out and cause problems when eating, speaking and laughing. If you suspect that your dentures do not fit properly, schedule an appointment with your dentist immediately so he or she can check your bite and make any necessary adjustments to your dentures.

Continue Brushing

Denture wearers are at increased risk of developing certain serious dental issues, including periodontal (gum) disease and fungal infections. For this reason, denture wearers must practice good oral hygiene by brushing the gums, tongue and palate with a soft-bristled toothbrush. This should be done every morning before putting on dentures and after removing them every night.

Soak Your Dentures Daily

You must remove your dentures every night when you go to bed. Brush your dentures carefully to remove any loose debris before soaking them in a cleaning solution. Rinse your dentures thoroughly after soaking them and before you place them back in your mouth.
